I hear so often from folks who want to travel to Africa, but don’t know how to get started. So I’m taking this opportunity to introduce people to my favorite continent myself!
You will be in experienced hands: This is my 18th trip to Africa, my sixth visit to Tanzania (including six months living and working there), and my fourth visit to Foresight Eco Lodge in particular. You can relax knowing that we are in the excellent care of hosts and guides who are like family to me.
We’ll go on safari to see Tanzania’s iconic wildlife, get to know absolutely wonderful locals, stay at a beautiful eco-lodge that supports the community, and smash all the negatives stereotypes about Africa along the way. Be warned: This place gets under your skin and you may need to come back.

I’m able to bring only 5 guests so that we can keep this experience close-knit and share our own private Land Cruiser.
Accommodations
Foresight Eco Lodge is perched on a hill overlooking Ngorongoro Conservation area and includes stunning views of the forest and starry night skies. Foresight is co-owned by Ernest, a local Tanzanian with decades of hospitality experience, and Anita, his German business partner. They employ all local staff, including an excellent chef and safari guides. The lodge invests its profits in community development, so your stay directly supports the community. They recently broke ground on construction of a neighborhood school!
Each guest will have their own private room with full bathroom. We have booked three Bungalows and two Tiny Houses. Each have their own unique appeal, so please check out the photos and descriptions on Foresight's website and let me know your preference via the form at the bottom of this page.

Itinerary
Subject to minor changes
Day 1 - Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where I will meet you. Overnight at Airport Planet Lodge.
Day 2 - We will be picked up by Foresight’s driver in the morning and make our way to Foresight Eco Lodge. It’s approximately a 4-hour drive that offers a lovely glimpse into life in Tanzania along the way. At Foresight, settle into your private bungalow or tiny house. Welcome dinner.
Day 3 - After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll take a nature walk in Ngorongoro Conservation Area with a local guide. We can organize a Swahili lesson in the evening for those interested.
Day 4 - We'll get an early start to spend a long day on safari in Serengeti National Park, where the world-famous wildebeest migration will be in full swing.
Day 5 - Day trip to visit the Hadzabe tribe (hunter gatherers still living their traditional lifestyle) and the Datoga tribe (who specialize in metalworking).
Day 6 - Free day. Relax at Foresight or tour a local organic coffee farm, go on a day hike, visit the nearby town of Karatu for souvenir shopping, or take another safari to Lake Manyara or Tarangire National Park. (Cost of free day activities not included.)
Day 7 - Safari to Ngorongoro Crater National Park (my favorite place on Earth). Closing dinner.
Day 8 - Check out of Foresight and transport back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (or elsewhere if planning further travel in the area).

COVID Safety Agreement
My goal is to travel with folks who prefer to be COVID-safe, so that we all feel comfortable on this adventure together. If these measure feel intrusive to you, then this probably isn’t the trip for you and that’s ok!
All trip participants agree to:
Be up to date on COVID-19 and flu vaccines
Rapid test the day you leave for Tanzania
Wear a high-quality mask throughout travel to Tanzania (including in airports)
Self-isolate if you develop symptoms during the trip (of course I do not want this to happen, so my hope is for folks to be extra careful in the 2 weeks leading up to departure.)
In Tanzania: Once we leave Kilimanjaro Airport, most of our activities will be outdoors for the remainder of the trip. I do not anticipate us needing to mask, as it will generally be the 6 of us + our local guide for the majority of the week. Safari drives will be in our own open-top Land Cruiser, and meals are served in an open-air restaurant (or picnics in the savanna!). Each guest will have their own private bungalow or tiny house. In general Tanzanians are not masking, and COVID is not seen as a big concern there, though no one would bother you for wearing a mask. I know there is a wide spectrum of preferences when it comes to COVID safety, so I want everyone to be clear on what to expect. Personally I have traveled extensively in Africa the past few years following these measures, and have remained healthy the whole time.
FAQs
What airport do I fly into?
Kilimanjaro International Airport (airport code JRO). Plan to arrive on or before Sunday February 2. I will meet you at the airport and take it from there!
For your return flight, you will need to leave enough time to drive back to the airport from Foresight (about 4 hours, and planning to be at the airport 2 hours before flight departure). Let me know if you need advice on booking flights.
Will I need travel vaccinations?
No additional vaccinations are required to enter Tanzania. Taking prophylactic anti-malarial medication during the trip is optional but recommended. We will talk more in-depth about travel health and optional vaccines as a group.
Do I need a visa?
US citizens do need a visa to enter Tanzania. The application is submitted online and costs $100.
How to Reserve a Spot

A $1,000 deposit will required to reserve your spot. I will fill spots on a first-come-first-served basis. If the trip sells out, I will keep you on a waitlist in case of cancellations.
